Door Meets Door (Front, Screen)


During the first round of designs, every door David sketched had a complimentary screen door on it. He again referred to the ones in our neighborhood, mostly aluminum scrolls or carved wood saloon doors. This “Langston” with the duck and scrolls was truly inspiring:

I’ve been trying to figure out since how we could put a screen door on our own house without ruining the aesthetic appeal of our fabulous “Pasadena.”
We had found a number of companies which make awesome reproductions of the oldies and goodies:

Moonshine Shades offers the standard scrolls with the ever popular heron and palm tree silhouettes.

La-Ti-Da Retro has herons with cattails as well as other old Florida retro ditties like the sailboat and ducks.

Hansen Aluminum has a large variety of old school inserts including the heron, flamingo and manatee, but also carries more geometric designs, and they do a limited amount of custom work, too.

But none of these compares to Austin’s own Susan Wallace. Check out the “Grover” with the “Red Ganesh!” Her custom pieces are amazingly affordable, and we’re working with her to do some Crestview Doors-inspired designs for some of our clients too. Very exciting!


All of this just confirms what we already knew: a fabulous modern front door deserves a spiffy retro screen door! A match made in heaven, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

So, if you had to pick a screen door for Erwin House… what would you suggest?

Whatever you pick, I’m thinking it needs to go with these kick-ass wall sconces! No offense to the ones that David made, but these things are the boss.

Well, I can tell you we are putting up the moonshine door as soon as spring hits. We have the insert at home, and all I need to do is paint the screen door (we’re going to paint it to match the trim). We spray painted the insert a brownish copper.

I know you will, but PICTURES!!! I know you had some troubles with it, but we are very anxious to see the finished result! :)

These are all nice choices, but this has been a burning question for me for some time now: why do we need a screen door?
I also live in Texas and our ugly screen door is obscuring our amazing mid-century door (though if that one ever gives up I am totally getting a Crestview door). I’d like to get rid of it, but is there a reason why I shouldn’t… and why you should cover up the loveliness of yours?

I think it’s the combination of bugs and nice weather that we get nearly 6 months of the year in Texas that makes a screen door useful.

Okay! Just checking it wasn’t to protect the door or something… because while the weather may be ok, I think the days of leaving our front door open are over. City life, sigh.

Thanks for posting these screen door sources. I have been looking for something for our 1955 ranch for a couple of months. I’m really digging “Mountain” from Hansen Aluminum (among several others).
If I were you, I’d go with the minimal “Tropical” from Hansen. I think it would frame your Pasadena windows fantastically.

Hi
I’m checking with Hansen, and she tells me they don’t sell the inserts, just aluminum doors that contain the inserts. She says you cannot buy inserts only. Maybe I got a bad rep on the phone?
