Need. Roof. Help. I heard from Laurie at Ranch Redo that you guys might have some advice when it comes to roofing.
We have a 1957 Tech built kit home in sunny South Carolina where the summer heat and humidity can be excruciating. The problem? Our amazing vaulted ceilings have an R value of 2 because it’s basically tounge and groove ceiling, then sheets of plywood with shingles on top. No insultation. Okay, it might be an R value of 4.
So, we’re currently trying to decide whether to re-shingle, reshingle and add insulating foam to maybe boost the R value to 12 or do a mind-numbingly expensive metal roof that supposed to insulate in the winter and repel heat in the summer. Any experience in this area?
Love the Crestview doors, too. I’ve seen your website before. What a brilliant idea to remake those. We’re trying to get our hands on an original. There are a thousand originals in our area and I know people are just throwing them out. It’s sad.
Sorry to go on so long! Julie

Hi, Julie!
Well, obviously our roof was completely removed and a new one was put on, so I’m not sure what to tell you about an existing roof. However, I do know that our contractor originally wanted to put in a radiant heat shield to help deflect some of that nasty Texas heat! We didn’t need it in the end since they installed so much fiberglass insulation, but we seriously considered it…
I hope this helps a little!!
If you do snag an original door, please send pics! We’re always researching older models. Watch out for additional energy efficiency issues — most of the original doors were hollow-core with single-pane glass. In addition, the glues used to hold them together and often the finishes were highly toxic. Either way, though, we’d love to know what your experience is with installing an old exterior door :)
Good luck!!

Christiane!

Love the redesign! Admittedly, I didn’t see the old blog, but I’m assuming its remodel is as amazing as your home’s. To which I add, “Holy renovations!” Can’t believe everything you’ve done! Amazing! I look forward to scouring your blog for inspiration and stealing every good idea you’ve had. Feel free to reciprocate. Assuming, of course, you can call any of our ideas “good.”

Oh… and thanks for visiting our blog. Unfortunately, being added to your “Blogs we read” kills my theory that no one was really paying attention to our mid-century modern reno-saga.
I will now have to be much more dutiful in posting. Much more. Much, MUCH more.

Thanks again. We look forward to being inspired by Erwin House.

Christiane, I think the blog is fantastic and can’t imagine what the “facelift” is going to be – looking forward to it!
We’re looking for stair railing in Austin and are having no luck. I like the simple black railing y’all have in the living room – can you share the source?
Thanks!

The railing came from Austin Wholesale Decking Supply.

Hey David – What’s up with the door business? I’ve sent 2 e-mails to crestview and haven’t received a response. I’d like to know if you could make a Langston with the windows on the hinge side of the door. If so, what would it cost?
Thanks
