A Big Week for Crestview Doors

It’s been an exciting week for Crestview Doors. First we were blogged by houseblogs.net. They have kindly lent us their support and helped with a call for photos of unique mid-century doors. We’ve already got several new designs in the flickr pool. I had not seen the sunshine design before.
Then Modern Austin gave us a shout-out.
And the biggest news is our first customer. We’re making an over-sized 40 inch door (based on this door) with a sidelight. It’s going to look awesome on it’s mid-century California home.
In working with this customer I realized I can offer design services along with the doors. The customer wasn’t sure which door she wanted, or how the side lights should be arranged. So I told her to email me a photo of her current front door. Below is the mockup I sent.

Put your mouse over the image to see the current door. My mockup was assuming the least amount of additional work, so it used the colors of the house. In reality, they are putting flagstone on that wall and will be staining the door a dark walnut. In about 4 to 6 weeks I hope to have a beautiful after photo to share.
And I created some very geeky swag for the company.

Is that funny? Does that make sense? Or is it just me?
And one last thing. Since two people last week told me that Archie Bunker’s house had a “Grover” on it, I had to look it up.

The design of the “Grover” is so powerful as an icon for working class America that people remember it being in “All in the Family” when it wasn’t.
I was kinda hoping there would be a unique design there. I was going to call it the “Bunker”.

That’s funny. The Bunker!
Archie’s door is a very colonial 1970′s era door. It went with the Spirit of ’76 theme found in so many homes from that decade. God. I can still remember the curtains my mom made!!!!!

Maybe the Grover is depicted in the opening credits?

Okay, I don’t get it. High on the hinge side?

I don’t get it, either. Sorry. :( I understand what you mean about the “Grover” windows being high on the hinge side to lead your eye to the knob, but that’s just because I read something you wrote about that. It’s too subtle, I think. The only metaphor I can think of is being unhinged, which probably isn’t the tone you want. Maybe something about an “open door”?
I absolutely love the sunshine door. I found one like the “Woodrow” that has the windows vertically instead of on the diagonal — the windows are a bit bigger and closer together, so they basically form an all-glass diamond. I’ll grab a pic if I can remember where it was.
Finally, and this is why I’m really commenting, you were kind enough to provide a link that led me to doorknob extensions for my replacement knob, and I can’t for the life of me find it. Remember, I have the round escutcheon on the “Grover” and crummy fake brass interior knobs? We tried replacing them and couldn’t make it work. Would you happen to know a source for extensions?
With continued good luck on the door biz,
rr

I think Skyview Baptist Church on Koenig between Lamar and Airport has like 4 Grovers on the front of one of the buildings–need to check if they’re high on the hinge side though!
p.s. there are a lot of similar doors where I live over in the Northfield neighborhood (between Koenig, Lamar, Airport, and 51st) and that lovely scroll/bird screen door that I covet.

What about One Day at a Time? Was that a Grover door?

Oooo, we’ve got two wicked MCM doors in the neighborhood near us. One would be a PITA to replicate, but I’m gonna take a pic and send it to you anyway. It’s too sweet to not be shared.
