Our New Midcentury Modern Door

Our front door is finally finished. We stained it to match the stairs and with that last coat of varnish it looks glorious.
The first photo is a mid century ranch house around the corner from our house. I love this entry door and we decided to copy it for our front door. Our little neighborhood is full of these mid-century doors – flush doors with veneer and inset windows in a modern design. The most common one is the three rectangular windows set at a diagonal. (quick houseblogs question: Is there a name for that kind of door?)
The second and third photos are our door, before and after stain.
Update: If you are looking for this style of door, check out Crestview Doors.

Where’d you get the door? We’ve been looking for a new front door for our house, but in steel/vinyl rather than wood b/c we get full 100% sun that will warp anything we put there…
Love the 3 pane design!
We had it custom made by the company that made all our interior doors. The nice thing about a wood door (aside from the nice feel of wood) is that a person can make it using wood and tools. Metal and fiberglass comes from a factory. I’d be surprised if you could get a custom designed fiberglass door without ordering a hundred of them.
If you like that design, but it absolutely can’t be wood, you might be able to get a commecial metal door and put in three utility window kits with 12 inch square windows.
If you think you might be able to use a solid wood UV rated exterior door, email me at dme@io.com.
I’ve found myself looking at your site quite a bit as we gear up for renovations of our own. Quite inspiring stuff here. Thanks so much for sharing it with the masses. Question - where’d ya’ll find the ceiling fan/light you have in your living room? Also, did ya’ll buy your kitchen backsplash tiles locally (Austin)? Thanks in advance for the leads.
Thanks! The tile is from Modwalls. Not local to Austin, but a very cool little company.
When we picked out those fans, Christiane was past due, dealing with an ear infection, and sitting on a stack of boxes breathing heavily. And my mom was on the phone from France asking if we had had the baby yet.
We picked them out because the glass had this cool mid-century stressed silk pattern in it. I didn’t know until after we moved in that the fan had florescent lighting and a remote control.
I think we were at Home Depot on St. John’s and I’m 80% sure it was a Hampton Bay, but I can’t find that model online.
I don’t know if there is a name for the diagonal 3-pane door, I pretty much just called it crap when yanked it out of the jam after we moved in. I am still a bit irked by hollow-core/veneer exterior doors. What the hell were they thinking? Every one we had was peeling and warped.
Your custom door is pretty cool. And congrats on getting that driveway thing going.
we had a steel door made with the three stacked windows. was not too expensive.
