Powerless

On Thursday, our front porch was showered with more than raindrops. Our IKEA shipment arrived with all of the supplements for our kitchen redo: the new sink, the faucet, the garbage and recycling bins and pull-out tray, the under-cabinet lighting.

Part of me thought that this point in the project would always seem very far away, but it is just around the corner. Installing the kitchen is one of the last things to do! Wheeee!
We planned to take the boxes over to the storage on site, but they ended up in our rental livingroom instead once a storm rolled into the area Thursday evening.
We had no idea how powerful the storm really was until the tornado warning flashed on the television screen and the power suddenly went out. We’re Texans; we’re used to intense storms. We’re also city folk; we’re not used to being without power for several days.
The storm was much more powerful than we could have imagined, and thousands of our neighbors were powerless for the next 24 hours. Unfortunately, a pocket of 8 houses on our street went without power from Thursday night until earlier this afternoon. Let me tell ya, four days without power is a little stressful for a woman who is 9 months pregnant.

The IKEA boxes are still in our livingroom, along with two infant carseats and a very curious kitty. In our remodel are stacks of drywall waiting to be hung. David tells me that, even though the windows were open through the last three days of storms, the drywall stayed fairly dry.
To all who were affected by the storm, we hope your roofs are intact, your cars are dent-free, and your family members are all safe and sound.

My wife was 9 months pregnant with our son (oh, and had a broken foot) when hurricane Isabel came through in 2003. We were with out power from Friday until Tuesday morning. Tuesday night she went into labor as she was writing the power company a check.
I am loving watching the progress with your house.

What happened to all that food in your freezer?!?!? 4 days without power can be a real hindrence to keeping things frozen!

Tom, yikes!! Friday night, I had a little false labor. Without power, it was definitely going to be an adventure, but we got lucky and it passed.
Luckily, our next door neighbor to the west had power and she let us run an extension cord to the fridge. Thank goodness because I had at least a month’s worth of cooking in there!! Note to self: bake Sandy some brownies.

After about 24 hrs without power, I realized our next door neighbor had electricity, so I asked her if we could snake an extension cord across her yard. We still had big ice cubes in the freezer, but the ice cream was a gonner.
Wow, Tom. That’s quite an arrival.
