The Shrinking Eaves

IMG_3497
The second floor has been creating traffic jams of rubberneckers on Grover for the last two days. I wonder what they’re thinking?
I’ve had a few initial observations.
1. It looks bigger on the outside, than I thought.
2. It looks smaller on the inside.
3. The downstairs bathroom and bedroom are more public that I thought. Maybe this will be better when the stairs are in.
4. So glad we went for the 9th ceilings.
5. So glad we did the low pitched roof. A 12:3 would have been huge.
6. It makes more sense on the lot and relative to the other houses than I expected. With a shed roof the high point of the house is on one side. But that tall side is almost in the middle of the lot. We also have two other 2 story houses adjacent to ours, so the second story is not that weird.
7. I really like the hackberries on the property line. They soften that high wall a lot. I wonder how we can gracefully transition to real trees before one of them falls on our deck or the neighbor’s carport.
8. Sightlines in the house are great. You can stand in the living room and see almost every room of the house.
9. The master closet is going to totally rock.
10. It’s going to look like a big purple Circuit City until we get the deck on.
We have the first bit of roof rafters and eaves. And the eaves are wrong. Just another boneheaded mistake on the plans. I wanted large 36 inch eaves. The draftsman said we couldn’t do more than 30 inches. I said ok. Then he drew the plans with 24 inches. I had to spend some time with the plans last night to figure out what size he had drawn them. It’s not marked anywhere, so you have to take a ruler to the scale drawing to calculate it.
This is a major detail that is important to the way the house shades itself, the style and the scale of the house. Besides, I dislike small eaves. Can’t really say why. I hope it’s easy to fix at this point.
Sometime this weekend I’m going to go over there and measure everything.
