Framing Walkthrough

Framing Walkthrough

We met early this morning with our contractor, Ace, and the framer he hired. We had one last chance to make sure that everything was exactly how we wanted it: the placement of all of the doors and windows, the walkable area of the kitchen, the height of the ceiling. Things should move pretty quickly now barring any delays like lack of materials or bad weather.

The demolition crew was already at work yanking off more siding and tearing through the roof. We watched as they removed our beloved picture window and we cringed as they stood on the unsupported north corner of the house which seemed destined to fall at any moment.

It was quite an experience, standing there, watching the progress happen. People have been telling us for months now that construction and remodeling are stressful. Usually, they talk about the stress of picking out cabinets or choosing a landscaper. I think there is a stress that underlies all of that. It is the quiet stress of watching your home evolve into something new and different.

Of course, this is all good. We’re moving in a very positive direction. Nonetheless, it feels very naked right now, our little house. All of her clothes are off and she is standing there, stark and vulnerable, on the brink of a major transition. She’s coming of age.

I can’t help of thinking about her in an organic way. She’s a great house. She needed a lot of work and attention. She’s growing up.

Boy, am I ever pregnant.

Yes, you certainly are pregnant, and David looks like an expectant father standing there in front of the ‘house.’
