Week One

They finished clearing the concrete and dug the holes for the piers that go around the exterior edge of the house. Most of the concrete in the back porch will remain. No reason to remove it. So, someday years from now when the new owners puzzle over what the house looked like before the renovation and addition, there will be a big 12ft by 15ft slab of concrete, with a strip jack hammered out and replaced with limestone, a piece of PVC embedded between the rocks for holding a shade umbrella, under a dining room.
A clue.
As I was getting in my car this evening, I noticed that the port-a-potty was moving a little. Then two small boys popped out, maybe 5 and 6 years old. They were dressed in full dress western wear. Hats, boots, starched jeans and starched western shirts. They ran to the pickup parked in front of our house. Then a man got out and walked over to it. He was dressed just like the boys, ten gallon hat and all. I was standing about 10 feet away at the door of my car. I said, “Are you on the crew working on the house?”
And in a thick western accent right out of Gun Smoke he said. “No, I’m ah-jus barreein this-ah here port-a-potty.”
I said, “Alright” and got in my car and drove home. It’ll be an early night tonight. I’m beat.
